What is Cold Laser Therapy and How Can it Help Me?

My office has utilized cold laser therapy for almost 20 years. Although I have updated my laser, to keep it state of the art, the science behind it has stayed the same.

Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), is a treatment that uses special kinds of light to help the body heal. Unlike the lasers we see in movies, cold lasers don’t produce heat and are very gentle. They work by sending low-level light waves into the body, which can stimulate cells and promote healing.

At the tiny, basic level of our body’s cells, there are small parts called mitochondria. These mitochondria act like power stations, providing energy for the cells. Cold laser therapy targets these mitochondria. When the light from the cold laser reaches them, something amazing happens. The light energy gets converted into cellular energy, called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This extra energy helps the cells do their job better. They can repair themselves, make new proteins, and even help with DNA repair.

Moreover, cold laser therapy influences something called reactive oxygen species (ROS) within cells. ROS are essential for cell communication and control. When there’s too much or too little of them, it can cause problems. Cold laser therapy helps balance the levels of ROS, reducing stress and inflammation within the cells.

Another important thing cold laser therapy does is improve blood flow. Blood vessels are like tiny highways in our body, carrying oxygen and nutrients to different parts. Cold laser therapy causes these blood vessels to widen, allowing more blood to flow. This increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to the areas that need healing. It’s like giving the body’s natural healing processes a boost.

Additionally, cold laser therapy can affect nerve cells. When we feel pain, it’s because our nerves are sending signals to our brain. Cold laser therapy can interrupt these pain signals, providing relief. This is especially useful for people suffering from conditions like arthritis or sports injuries.

In simpler terms, think of cold laser therapy as a gentle, invisible helper that goes inside our body and tells our cells to work better. By providing them with extra energy and reducing inflammation, it helps our body heal faster, making it a valuable tool in the world of medicine. I use this special laser to help people recover from injuries and manage their pain, making their lives a little bit easier and less painful.
